In Brief : Pirates Sign Robinson as Reliever

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates avoided a salary arbitration hearing today by signing right-handed reliever Jeff Robinson to a two-year contract.
Robinson, 28, is the fifth of eight Pirates who filed for arbitration to agree to a new contract. Robinson had sought $820,000 in arbitration and the Pirates had offered $660,000.
Joe Bick, Robinson’s agent, said the deal includes a substantial raise for 1990 and averages more than $820,000 a season.
Robinson tied for second in the National League with 75 appearances in 1988, the most by a Pirate since Kent Tekulve made 76 appearances in 1983. He led major league relievers in innings pitched with 124.2 and had a career-high 11 wins, the most by a Pirate reliever since Tekulve in 1982.
Robinson was 11-5 with a 3.03 ERA and nine saves. Acquired from San Francisco in August, 1987, his career record is 32-32 with 31 saves in 262 games.
