Santa Fe Southern Pacific Corp. posted a 37% gain in fourth-quarter earnings to $156.1 million but reported a $46.5-million loss for the year. The Chicago-based company had a 1987 profit of $373.5 million. The firm reported that net income from continuing operations of $146.7 million for the year were down 39%, reflecting an increase of $415.1 million in interest expense and costs of approximately $47 million related to a restructuring of the real estate, energy and transportation company.
