College Roundup : Lord Rushes to the Rescue in Final Minute for Glendale
When it came down to make-or-break time for Glendale College, Gary Fowler and Justin Lord opted for the former.
Fowler hit a jump shot with 1:20 remaining and Lord added a pair of free throws in the final minute as Glendale held off West L. A., 68-63, in a Western State Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at Glendale.
With his team holding a 64-61 lead, Fowler connected to give Glendale its biggest lead of the second half. Lord, who finished with 10 points off the bench, clinched the game moments later with the free throws after a West L. A. basket.
Fowler and freshman guard Bruce Heicke each scored 15 points for Glendale (12-8, 3-2 in conference play).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Valley 83, College of the Canyons 57--After taking a 19-point lead at halftime, the Lady Monarchs were never threatened in winning their second consecutive Western State Conference game.
Valley went ahead, 45-26, at halftime and outscored the Lady Cougars, 38-31, in the second period. The Lady Monarchs (18-3, 3-1), who have won 14 of their past 15 games, converted 49% of their field-goal attempts and were 10 of 19 from the free-throw line.
Center Ruth Aguilar led Valley with 22 points and Tisa Rush had 11 points. Forward Shagarro Lattin added 10 points and 9 rebounds.
Cal Lutheran 67, Southern California 49--Three of Cal Lutheran’s starters scored in double figures to lead the host Regals in their Golden State Athletic Conference opener.
Heidi Griffith scored 18 points for Cal Lutheran (4-7), Leslie Stevens added 11 points and 9 rebounds and Brenda Lee had 10 points.
