Two black San Bernardino police officers found letters in their lockers threatening them with violence if they took exams required for promotion to corporal, Police Chief Donald Burnett disclosed. He said he will request an FBI investigation if those responsible for the letters do not come forward within a week. Describing the incident as “blatant racial bigotry,†San Bernardino Mayor Evlyn Wilcox issued a public apology to the officers and said she will fire the person or persons who wrote the letters, which were signed by the “Aryan Police Officers Assn.†Officials say other black police officers in the city have been harassed in a similarly anonymous manner. About 70 officers are competing for three openings.
