International Soccer at Santa Ana Stadium : Mexican Team Defeats Bayern Munich

Luis Alves scored one goal and set up another to give Mexico’s Club America soccer team a 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich of West Germany in an exhibition match at Santa Ana Stadium Friday.

The match was played before an estimated crowd of 11,500--the largest to see a soccer match in Santa Ana since Dec. 4, 1987, when 11,700 saw an Olympic qualifying match between Mexico and Guyana.

Alves’ goal and assist supported the goalkeeping of Adrian Chavez, who withstood a barrage of difficult shots to record 9 saves.

Bayern Munich, which is currently on top of the West German first division, was making its first appearance in Southern California since the 1976-77 season.

Club America, the defending Mexican league champion, took a 1-0 lead with 15 minutes gone in the game when Luis Alves broke away from a Bayern Munich defender and fired a rising shot past goalie Raimond Aumann.

Alves’ goal came less than a minute after Club America goalie Adrian Chavez made a diving save of Johnny Ekstrom’s breakaway shot.

Bayern Munich came back to tie the score at 1-1 when Jurgen Wegmann took a pass from Ekstrom and rifled a low driving shot past the outstretched Chavez.

Seconds later, Chavez denied Bayern Munich a second goal when he made a lunging save of Ekstrom’s close-in header.

Chavez finished the period with 7 saves. Aumann, on the other hand, had relatively few challenges in the period as he had 3 saves.

Club America took a 2-1 lead with 22 minutes left in the second half when Alves grounded a diagonal pass to Juan Hernandez, who broke away from the Bayern Munich defense and shot the ball past Aumann.

Wegmann missed a chance to tie the score with 9:45 left in the game when his line-drive breakaway kick sailed wide of the net.
