Torrey Pines Loses for First Time This Season

Torrey Pines High School faced a 7-foot center and matching 6-foot 10-inch forwards, then faced its first defeat of the season, falling 68-32, to Miami Carol City in the final of the Palms tournament in Ft. Myers, Fla., Friday night.

The Falcons (13-1) opened with a field goal, but Carol City (7-2)--the eighth-ranked high school boys’ basketball team in the nation by USA Today--gave up only 1 more first quarter basket for a 15-4 lead going into the second quarter.

Forward Delon Turner led Carol City with 19 points, and center Charles Claxton added 13. Point guard Charlton Young was the tournament’s most valuable player.

For Torrey Pines, Courtie Miller had 15 points. Miller and teammate Kevin Flanagan, held to 4 points, were named to the all-tournament team.

The fourth quarter was the best for the Falcons, making their first appearance in this tournament, but they were still outscored, 21-14.

Torrey Pines was 12 for 38 overall and shot 30% from field goal range while Carol City was 26 of 40 and shot 65%.

Santana Tournament

Lincoln 106, Santana 58--Joe Temple scored 25 points and Lincoln led, 60-32, at the half in the championship game. Aaron Wilhite scored 21 points, and Victor Dean added 14 for Lincoln (13-1). Dean Thrall led Santana (7-2) with 21 points.

Southwest 75, Madison 61--Three players combined for 81 of the game’s 136 points. Madison’s Robby Robinson had 32, Adalberto Silva scored 28 for Southwest and teammate Art Balce added 21 in the tournament’s third-place game. Southwest improved to 9-5 while Madison dropped to 8-6. Robinson was named to the all-tournament team. Southwest led, 41-31, at the half.

Hilltop 70, Clairemont 63--In the fifth-place game, Hilltop trailed by 6 points (20-14) at the end of the first quarter but was able to pull within a basket by halftime (33-31). Hilltop’s Don Hardin led the game in scoring with 24 points and added 11 rebounds. Josh Wedding added 20 points for Hilltop.

Chula Vista 44, Grossmont 42--With 7 seconds to play and the score tied, 42-42, in the seventh-place game, Chula Vista’s Leo Casas made two free throws for the winning points. Richie Greaser led Chula Vista (5-11) with 12 points and Jeff Hawkins added 10. Todd Cady had 14 points for Grossmont (3-7).

Ben Fisher Tournament

Point Loma 62, Virginia Annandale 47--The score was tied 22-22 at halftime but Point Loma (13-0) broke away and outscored Annandale in the fourth quarter, 16-4. The Pointers have won 144 consecutive games at home. Monica Filer (23) and Tyeast Brown (18) combined for 41 points. Brown recorded 17 rebounds. Kerri Chaconas made three 3-pointers on her way to scoring 22 points for Annandale. Point Loma meets Chino at 2:15 today in the championship game.

Bonita Vista 52, Serra 30--Torril Purvis led Bonita Vista with 20 points to eliminate Serra (1-9) from tournament play. Wendy Smith had 10 points for Serra, which trailed, 22-15 at the half. Bonita Vista outscored Serra, 12-3, in the fourth quarter. Lynn Thoms of Serra had 15 rebounds.

Patrick Henry 60, Chula Vista 41--Sorii Epps (30) and Rochelle Johnson (18) combined for 48 points for Patrick Henry. Johnson had 13 rebounds. Patrick Henry was ahead by 5 at halftime, 27-22, but by the end of the third quarter had widened the gap, 43-32. Marcy Wolf scored 19 points for the Spartans.
