Search for 6 Crewmen of Sunken Ship Halted
BOSTON — The Coast Guard on Friday called off its air-sea search for six crewmen lost and presumed dead in the sinking of a Bermuda-bound cargo ship in an Atlantic gale.
Rescue planes Friday searched 9,300 square miles of ocean off New Jersey before the search was suspended at 8:25 p.m. The presumed deaths raise the death toll to eight in the sinking of the 254-foot container ship Lloyd Bermuda. The vessel went down Wednesday night after its cargo shifted in the storm.
Four injured crewmen and the body of another were pulled from the sea earlier. One of the four died en route to a hospital.
