Bruin Women Cagers Looking for a Win After 3 Losses
Trying to snap a three-game losing streak, the UCLA women’s basketball team (3-5) will play host to Ohio State at 5:15 p.m. Friday at Pauley Pavilion.
The Bruins recently returned from a road trip in which they lost to North Carolina, 95-71, and top-ranked Tennessee, 82-50. Against the Volunteers, UCLA freshman guard DeDe Mosman scored a career-high 16 points.
UCLA freshman center Molly Tideback is averaging a team-high 13.5 points and 4.8 rebounds a game.
The Pepperdine women’s basketball team (4-6 as the week began) will entertain Holy Cross at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Southwest Texas State at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Firestone Fieldhouse.
Four Waves have been scoring in double figures: junior guard Dionne Burgess, senior forward April Marion, freshman center Susan Tousey and junior guard Sherri Murrell.
The UCLA women’s swim team (4-0 in dual meets), which recently finished second behind Texas at the U.S. Open, will play host to Colorado State at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the men’s gymnasium pool.
At the open, Bruin sophomore Sheri Smith qualified for the NCAA meet by posting a 4:17.71 over the long course in the 400-meter free style. UCLA’s 400 medley relay team of Sue Potrepka, Jean Badding, Kristin Stoudt and Jenny Susser also qualified for the nationals with a 4:21.36.
Beno Bryant, Dorsey High School star football player and sprinter, and the Beverly Hills High 2-mile relay team will compete in the high school section of the Sunkist Invitational Indoor track meet starting at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Sports Arena.
Bryant will run in the 60-yard dash for football players. The Norman relay team includes Rich Gitahi, Jamie Billett, Craig Jepson and Hide Sano plus alternates Elliott Mason and Anthan Sunder.
Halibut Derby--The annual Santa Monica Bay Halibut Derby is scheduled April 1-2. Proceeds from the fishing tournament go to the Santa Monica Boys Club and the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History’s halibut hatchery program.
