UCSD Beaten in Tournament Opener
Defending champion St. Ambrose of Davenport, Iowa, opened its defense in the UC San Diego Classic women’s basketball tournament with an 87-57 victory over Cal State San Bernardino Wednesday night in Triton Pavilion.
UCSD lost its first-round game, dropping a 76-68 decision to Pacific Lutheran of Tacoma, Wash. The Tritons (5-3) were led by Beth Koenig and Michele Leonher with 17 points apiece. Kelly Larson led Pacific Lutheran (5-2) with 27 points.
In other opening-round games, Cal State Stanislaus defeated Millikin of Decatur, Ill., 82-44, and Luther of DeKorah, Iowa, defeated Emmanuel, 69-50.
The 8-team tournament continues today with consolation semifinals at 2 p.m. and 4 and championship semifinals at 6 and 8. UCSD meets Emmanuel at 4.
BASEBALL
The San Diego County Baseball Umpires Assn. will hold its first meeting for those interested in umpiring high school and youth baseball Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.
