In Brief : Czechs, Swedes in Cup Semifinals
PERTH, Australia — choslovakia and Sweden moved into the semifinals of the Hopman Cup team tennis competition today.
Mikael Pernfors led Sweden to a 3-0 victory over Yugoslavia, while Czechoslovakia rallied to beat Japan 2-1 in the international event, which features two-player teams from eight nations.
Czechoslovakia started poorly this morning when Miloslav Mecir was beaten 6-2, 6-4 by Shuzo Matsuoka. But Mecir and Helena Sukova beat Matsuoka and Masako Yanagi 7-5, 6-3 in mixed doubles, and Sukova then clinched the series with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Yanagi.
Pernfors beat Slobodan Zivojinovic 6-4, 6-3, then joined Catarina Lindqvist to beat Zivojinovic and Carmen Skulj 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-2 in mixed doubles.
Lindqvist beat Skulj 6-2, 6-3 in the final singles match.
Sweden will meet Czechoslovakia in the semifinals Friday. Australia will play the winner of the West Germany-France match in the other semifinal.
