Youth Missing Since Saturday : Teams to Resume Search for Boy Near Lake Morena
Search-and-rescue teams from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department unsuccessfully searched the snow-patched hills around Lake Morena on Monday for a teen-age boy who was reported missing Saturday after an overnight fishing expedition with friends.
The search was scheduled to resume this morning, although a Sheriff’s Department spokesman said deputies held hope that the boy was with friends and not lost.
It was not known what the boy was wearing. The weather in the area dipped into the low 20s both Saturday and Sunday night, and patchy snow was on the ground.
The boy, 15-year-old Andrew Irish Campbell of Guatay, set out with friends Friday afternoon for what was to be an overnight campout and fishing expedition.
But Campbell and another boy, Jimmy Henry, also 15, left the other boys Friday night and began to hike home, according to Sheriff’s Sgt. Cody Isabell.
The two hiked through the night, became disoriented and, at midday Saturday, happened upon some bicyclists who gave the boys directions to their vehicles, about half a mile away, for a ride to Pine Valley.
But Campbell developed leg cramps and Henry apparently went ahead without him, Isabell said.
Saturday afternoon, Campbell’s parents notified the Sheriff’s Department that their son was missing. Two deputies searched the area and found nothing Saturday, and returned Sunday with more help, including searchers in a helicopter, and again found no trace of the teen-ager.
Reserve deputies who make up the department’s search-and-rescue team were called out Monday morning, searched through the day and again found no signs of Campbell.
Campbell is described as 5-foot-8, 120 pounds, with blond hair, hazel eyes and olive complexion.
