World : Racism in Asian Marketing Hit

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Six U.S. congressmen accused a Taiwan company of perpetuating racial stereotypes by marketing a toothpaste named “Darkie” that depicts a grinning black minstrel on the package, the American Institute in Taiwan said today.
The toothpaste is one of many examples of racism in consumer products in Asia, the institute said, adding that governments in Asian countries should stop such racial stereotypes if they want strong relations with the United States. The visiting delegation was headed by Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.).
