An undercover Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was shot in the leg by a fellow officer as the narcotics investigators attempted to make arrests at an apartment in South-Central Los Angeles.
The wounded deputy was in serious but stable condition at Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital with a broken right leg, sustained when he was shot in the thigh Tuesday.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the undercover deputy, who has six years on the job, was mistakenly identified as an armed suspect by another deputy,” Deputy Gabe Ramirez said.
Neither deputy will be identified, Ramirez said, because they are still working undercover.
Five people were arrested at the scene of the 2 p.m. shooting, an apartment at the rear of a home in the 200 block of 92nd Street, and five kilograms of cocaine were seized, Deputy Hal Grant said. He had no further details.
