Dissatisfied Kane Quits as Coach of Football Team at St. Genevieve

Kevin Kane, the football and baseball coach at St. Genevieve High, announced Tuesday that he is leaving the school in June to seek a position with a high school that fields “a more ambitious football program.”
Kane, 34, announced his resignation as football coach Monday and said that he will coach the baseball team through the 1989 season. Kane, who is in his third year at the Panorama City school, posted a 1-8 record in his first year with the football team this fall after recording a 20-3 mark as a rookie coach last baseball season.
Although he declined to name specific schools, Kane said that he had applied as an assistant football coach and indicated that football was his first choice. He holds a teaching credential and is interested in working at either a public or private school.
“It’s been frustrating because people think I’m a baseball coach trying to wing it in football,” he said. “I think I’m a better football coach than I am a baseball coach. I worked 10 times harder in football but got 10 times the reward in baseball.”
Kane heaped the brunt of the blame for this fall’s 1-8 record on himself.
“I wasn’t satisfied with my performance, and I thought it was better for the team and myself to resign,” he said. “I’m looking for a more ambitious football program. I want to work hard for somebody else and see if I can be part of a successful program.”
No replacement has been named at St. Genevieve.
