The suspension of weightlifting from the Olympics...
The suspension of weightlifting from the Olympics after the Seoul drug scandals is to be proposed by Richard Pound, Canadian vice president of the International Olympic Committee at a 2-day executive board meeting starting today in Vienna.
Five weightlifters--2 Bulgarians, 2 Hungarians and a Spaniard--were among 10 competitors found guilty of drug use at the Seoul Olympics.
Pound said that he believes weightlifting should be removed from the Games until the IOC was satisfied real progress had been made in cleaning up the sport.
Pound’s proposal is likely to be opposed by Prince Alexandre de Merode, Belgian chairman of the IOC medical commission.
