Matzner Beats Huss in National Hardcourt Tennis

Diane Matzner of Austin, Tex., defeated Sally Huss of Bonsall, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, in the final of the women’s 40s division of the National Hardcourt Tennis Championships Sunday at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
Matzner, the fifth-seeded player, used a consistent baseline game against eighth-seeded Huss, who played more of a power game.
In the women’s 40s doubles finals, second-seeded Mary McLean of New York City and Bunny Smith of Miami defeated Judy Louie of Corona del Mar and Barbar Mueller of Rancho Mirage, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6. McLean-Smith won the third-set tiebreaker, 7-3.
Other winners were Gil and Scott Howard of Daly City, Calif., in the father-son division and the team of Jim Nelson (Irvine) and Ellen Bryant (Corona del Mar) in mixed doubles.
Top-seeded Jose Luis Noriega, a freshman at the University of San Diego, defeated USD teammate Mark Farren, 6-3, 6-4, to win the 11th San Diego All-College tennis tournament at USD.
Noriega, from Lima, Peru, did not lose a set in singles play and teamed with David Stewart to win the doubles competition. Noriega-Stewart beat Joe McDonough and Woody Yocom of San Diego State, 6-3, 6-1.
For Stewart, a senior, it was his fourth trip to the doubles finals, and his third victory.
