College Roundup : Long Beach Downs Irvine in Volleyball

Tara Cross had 42 kills to lead seventh-ranked Cal State Long Beach to a 15-12, 11-15, 15-6, 7-15, 16-14 victory over UC Irvine in a first-round match of the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s volleyball tournament Saturday night at Cal State Long Beach.
Chris Roberts had 26 kills for Irvine (19-12), which was making its first-ever appearance in an NCAA playoff match.
In the New Mexico State women’s basketball tournament:
New Mexico State 63, UC Irvine 41--Natasha Parks scored 15 points and had 11 rebounds to lead the Anteaters (2-2) in the final of the New Mexico State tournament at Las Cruces, N.M.
In the Houston women’s basketball tournament:
Cal State Fullerton 74, Houston 71--Jill Matyuch had 22 points, including 3 3-pointers, to lead the Titans (3-1) in the championship game at Houston.
In the Las Vegas wrestling tournament:
David Jones of Cal State Fullerton defeated Robbie Benjamin of North Idaho, 10-6, but later lost in the final to sixth-ranked Pat McDade of Boise State, 4-1.
In men’s nonconference swimming:
UC Irvine 184, Claremont McKenna 45--Irvine (2-1) received double victories from senior Matt Wright (50 freestyle, 100 free); junior Brian Judd (200 and 500 free); freshamn Jeff Klatt (200 individual medley and 200 butterfly) and freshman Tom Jordan (1- and 3-meter dives).
In women’s nonconference swimming:
UC Irvine 171, Claremont McKenna 56--Freshman Danielle Pajer won the 200 free and the 200 breaststroke and freshman Devon Coate won the 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley to lead Irvine (3-2) at Claremont.
