Keys Suffers Disk Injury, Out for Season

Charger defensive end Tyrone Keys was sidelined for the season Wednesday because of a herniated disk.

Keys, a sixth-year pro from Mississippi State, suffered the injury in last Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. Coach Al Saunders said Keys would be put through a “conservative rehabilitation program†in the hope of avoiding surgery.

Keys would have started against the Bengals in Cincinnati Sunday. Leslie O’Neal plays only sparingly on artificial turf because of the 1986 knee injury from which he only recently recovered. In Keys’ absence, a backup defensive tackle, Les Miller or Karl Wilson, probably will be moved to end.
