Starting Jan. 1, proposed airline mergers and acquisitions must be reviewed for antitrust problems by the Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department, the FTC said. The Department of Transportation now has antitrust authority over airline mergers but, under the Civil Aeronautics Board Sunset Act, will lose that authority Dec. 31. The FTC said any airline merger to be completed on or after Jan. 1 is subject to FTC review even if it has been approved by the Transportation Department.
