SOUTHERN SECTION FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS : Division I : Loyola Stays Unbeaten, Rips Westminster
Westminster High School’s football team could not take advantage of first-half turnovers by Loyola and lost, 30-10, Friday in front of 1,200 at Glendale High School in the first round of the Southern Section Division I playoffs.
Westminster (4-7) moved the ball well and recovered 2 of 3 Loyola fumbles in the first quarter. However, the Lions came away with only 3 points on a 22-yard field goal by Ryan Pence.
Loyola (11-0), the No. 1 seed, took control in the second quarter. Quarterback Matt Smith’s 81-yard bootleg with 9 minutes 51 seconds left in the second quarter put the winners in front, 6-3. Seconds later, Jimmy Klein intercepted Westminster quarterback Bob Elliott’s pass which Loyola almost immediately converted into its second touchdown when Smith threw 32-yards to Klein with 9:01 left in the half.
Paul Stonehouse kicked a 51-yard field goal with 7 seconds left in the half for a 16-3 lead.
Elliott completed 10 of 27 passes for 108 yards and had 2 interceptions. He did throw a 18-yard touchdown pass to Al Togonon. But, by that time, the Cubs had a 30-3 lead.
