Mike Benjamin ran for 91 yards in 13 carries and scored 3 second-half touchdowns to lead La Verne Lutheran High School to a season-closing 28-20 Arrowhead League victory over Capistrano Valley Christian Friday at Saddleback College.
Benjamin, who also had a 2-point conversion run, scored on runs of 10 and 47 yards in the fourth quarter as La Verne Lutheran (2-7, 2-2) held off a late rally by Capistrano Valley Christian (1-9, 1-4).
La Verne Lutheran took an 8-0 lead with 2 minutes gone in the second quarter on Carl Blanke’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Mike Pi and Benjamin’s 2-point conversion run.
Two minutes after La Verne Lutheran scored, the Eagles narrowed the lead to 8-6 on Bret Biegert’s 1-yard touchdown run that capped a 60-yard, 5-play drive in which Bret’s brother, sophomore Brian, rushed for 42 yards in 3 carries.
Bret Biegert threw touchdown passes to Jason Rodarmel and Robert Brown in the fourth quarter and Brian Biegert added a 2-point conversion for Capistrano Valley Christian.
