One-Day Marriage but 14-Year Divorce
CAIRO — After a marriage that lasted barely one day, a woman had to fight a legal battle for 14 years to obtain a divorce, the newspaper Al Gomhouria said.
The woman, whose name was withheld, asked for the divorce, claiming that her husband beat her on their wedding night as the guests watched. “She left the wedding ceremony to apply for the divorce,†the newspaper said Saturday.
But a court turned down the request on the grounds that the experiences of one day were not enough to prove “the impossibility of matrimonial cohabitation,†the newspaper said.
The wife appealed the verdict.
Before the Appeals Court, she accused her husband of manipulating the law and prolonging the litigation process for 14 years, “which wasted the best years of her youth.â€
The court relented and approved her request.
