A man and woman were seriously injured in North Hollywood early Sunday when a suspected drunk driver crashed his sports car into their parked car, Los Angeles police said.

About 2 a.m., a Chevrolet Corvette, which may have been drag-racing, careened out of control after crossing slightly elevated railroad tracks on Lankershim Boulevard, north of Chandler Boulevard, said Officer Ed Pedneau of the Valley Traffic Division.

The Corvette plowed into a Volkswagen Jetta occupied by a man and a woman, knocking the parked car into the air and against a tree, Pedneau said. The Jetta landed upside down, and the woman was thrown out of the vehicle, he added.

The woman, 23, suffered severe head injuries. Paramedics took her to St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank where she was placed on a life-support system and was listed in critical condition.

Her male companion, also 23, was hospitalized for a fractured pelvis, shattered leg, and head injuries, police said. He was listed in serious condition at St. Joseph. The identities of the two were withheld because their families had not been notified.

The Corvette’s driver, Harvey Hixon, 27, of Lake View Terrace, was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving and taken to the jail ward at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center for treatment of head injuries. His condition was listed as good.
