Navy Ship Signals Confuse Air Crash Warning Devices

Airliners testing new collision avoidance systems sometimes have been unable to tell the difference between an oncoming plane and a Navy ship sitting in the water below, a Federal Aviation Administration official said Friday.

The problem, caused by electronic signals from the ships, can be corrected before the systems are installed on all larger U.S. passenger aircraft beginning late next year, the official said.
