Technicians in French Guiana made final preparation for the launch of an Ariane rocket carrying a television satellite that promises to revolutionize French broadcasting. Weather conditions were good at the European Space Agency launch site on the edge of the jungle on the northern coast of South America. Technicians received a green light for lift off, due by noon today. The Ariane 2 rocket will carry into stationary orbit the TDF1, a five-channel satellite that will beam TV shows directly into the home. The new satellite, which will be operational by the end of December, has a lifespan of eight years and will sit 22,000 miles over the Atlantic Ocean.
