The Justice Department announed a final settlement providing $750,000 to nine people who were subjected to mind-control experiments by their psychiatrist, whose research was aided by a CIA front organization. The CIA in the late 1950s granted $60,000 to Dr. Ewen Cameron, a Canadian, who used the money to conduct experiments with patients. He subjected them to drug-induced sleep therapy for weeks at a time, gave them LSD and administered electro-shock therapy at up to 75 times the usual intensity. Cameron’s goal, to reprogram behavior, caught the attention of CIA officials when the agency was concerned with purported Soviet and Chinese break-throughs in brainwashing and interrogation techniques.
