Sunny Hills 33, Canyon 7--Jon Beuerlein threw two first-half touchdown passes to lead Sunny Hills to a convincing victory over Canyon in front of 500 at El Modena High School.

Beuerlein replaced All-Southern Section quarterback David Chisum in the Lancer lineup this year after Chisum guided Sunny Hills to a Freeway League title. When Chisum graduated last spring, that opened the door for Beuerlein, who played mostly defense last year.

“He is progressing every week,†said Sunny Hills Coach Tim Devaney. “That shows me he worked hard in the off season and it’s paid off so far.â€

Beuerlein completed 8 of 12 passes for 124 yards and led a balanced offensive attack. Trailing, 7-6, entering the second quarter, Beuerlein fired scoring passes to Jeff White for 28 yards and another to Benny Rodriguez for 15 yards with just 15 seconds remaining in the half. Mike Mitobe kicked the extra point for a 19-7 lead.

Sunny Hills (3-1) gained 228 yards on the ground and scored 2 second-half rushing touchdowns. Brian Pizula, who had 145 yards in 12 carries, scored with 5:19 remaining in the third quarter on a 4-yard run. Mitobe kicked the extra point for 26-7 lead.

Reserve running back Collins Solomon scored the final touchdown for Sunny Hills on a 4-yard run that capped an 8-play drive. Kenny Overby rushed for the first Lancer touchdown on a 1-yard run that cut into Canyon’s early 7-0 lead.
