David P. Gardner, president of the University of California, has called on chancellors of his nine campuses to reinvigorate their efforts to reflect in the university the ethnic and cultural diversity of the state. In a letter, Gardner wrote, “While we have made steady, even dramatic progress, we have not done so evenly across all areas or campuses, including our business and purchasing affirmative-action programs.†Gardner urged the strengthening of outreach and fellowship programs for women and minority graduate and post-doctoral students. He also proposed a new program to encourage minority undergraduates to pursue academic careers and creation of a director responsible for staff and affirmative-action programs.
