‘Evils of Two Lessers:’ Bush and Dukakis Campaigns
My Republican friends are alarmed at the thought of Dukakis becoming President; my Democratic friends are alarmed at the thought of Bush becoming President. Apparently almost everyone is alarmed, if not appalled, at the thought of Danny Quayle becoming vice president.
I conducted a nonscientific but revealing study over the past two days, driving from Thousand Oaks to Hollywood and back.
I saw five bumper stickers reading BUSH for PRESIDENT; four reading DUKAKIS/BENTZEN;one reading BUSH/BUSH. I saw no bumper sticker on which the name of Danny Quayle was mentioned.
It occurred to me that people are self-conscious, perhaps embarrassed, maybe even outraged at the thought of Quayle being one heart-beat away from the presidency.
It is a sobering and numbing thought! We know this is the season for politics: Let us pray that it is not the season for Quayle!
