Michael Schwartz, Kent State president, canceled the school’s hockey schedule for the 1988-89 season over a hazing incident that resulted in criminal charges against 12 team members.
Five freshmen who were hazed were charged with under-age consumption of alcohol, a first-degree misdemeanor, and face possible penalties of 6 months in jail and $1,000 fines. Two team members were charged with furnishing alcohol to minors, also a first-degree misdemeanor, and five team members were charged with hazing.
