Reagan Says Bush Eased Allies’ Fears on Missiles

BOCA RATON, Fla. — President Reagan said today that he and Vice President George Bush brought the Soviets to the nuclear bargaining table “because they knew we meant business.”
At a $1,000-a-plate GOP state fund-raising brunch, the President contended that Bush had completed “one of the most important diplomatic efforts in this Administration” several years ago by calming Allied fears over deploying a new round of medium-range missiles in Western Europe.
Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev have since reached agreement to remove those missiles but also to remove Eastern Bloc missiles from both sides of Europe.
