Local News in Brief : Controversial Tax Plan Delayed
- Share via
The Rancho Palos Verdes City Council will not begin collecting a controversial utility tax after Nov. 15, even though it may legally do so.
City voters rejected extension of the 5% tax by a 52% margin in June, but the council was advised by its staff that it could disregard the vote based on a state appellate court ruling last week, overturning Proposition 62. The 1986 proposition required a public vote on new taxes imposed after July 31, 1985.
Despite the staff advice, the council indicated it would not go against the public vote. The 2-year-old tax has raised about $5-million for street and storm drain repair.
