Local News in Brief : Carson Administrator
Jack R. Smith, former city manager of Cathedral City, started work Wednesday as interim city administrator in Carson.
The City Council appointed Smith, 54, this week after deciding last week not to renew the contract of Bill McKown, the deputy city administrator who had been in the top post since City Administrator Dick Gunnarson retired July 1.
Smith worked as city manager of Cathedral City, which is next to Palm Springs, from 1982 until he retired Aug. 31. Before that, he was the county manager of Coconino County in Arizona.
The appointment of Smith, who will earn $7,000 a month, is viewed as a temporary measure. The council has conducting a search for a permanent replacement for Gunnarson.
Smith graduated from California State University, Long Beach, with a degree in political science and received a master’s degree in management from the University of Redlands.
Smith has served as a board member for the National Assn. of County Administrators, as president of the Arizona Assn. of County Administrators and as chairman of the managers subcommittee of the Coachella Valley Assn. of Governments.
