Three young white men convicted of misdemeanor riot charges in the slaying of a black man chased into traffic in Howard Beach in Queens, N.Y., in 1986 were treated as youthful offenders and ordered to serve weekends in jail for four months. State Supreme Court Justice Thomas Demakos granted youthful offender treatment, which erases a criminal record, to William Bollander, 19, James Povinelli, 18, and Thomas Farino, 18. They were also sentenced to 32 months probation and 200 hours community service. Three youths convicted of more serious crimes in the incident have been sentenced to prison.
