John Robertson, Garden Grove’s acting police chief since June, on Monday was given the job permanently by the City Council.
Robertson, 37, succeeds Frank Kessler, who was the city’s police chief for 13 years before his resignation. Kessler, 55, is a candidate for a seat on the City Council in the Nov. 8 election.
Robertson, a lifelong Garden Grove resident and the father of two children, has been a member of the Police Department for 14 years. Before his elevation to acting police chief, he was the captain in charge of the Operations Services Bureau of the department.
As Garden Grove’s seventh police chief, Robertson will direct a staff of 220 full-time and part-time employees, including 120 uniformed police officers.
