Golf Roundup : Pate, Weibring Tie for Top Spot After 68s

Steve Pate and D.A. Weibring shot their second straight 68s Friday to share the second-round lead in the $600,000 Bank of Boston golf tournament at Sutton, Mass.

Pate and Weibring were at 6-under-par 136 after 36 holes at the Pleasant Valley Country Club, moving past first-round leaders David Frost and Donnie Hammond.

Frost, who shot a 70 after an opening-round 67, slipped into a third-place tie at 137 with Fuzzy Zoeller, who had a 69. Hammond struggled to a 73 and fell back into a pack at 140.

Wayne Levi, the 1980 champion, Mark Brooks and Mark Calcavecchia all shot 67s and were at 138.

Bill Sander, who shot a 66, was tied at 139 with John Mahaffey, Tom Byrne, Joey Sindelar, David Rummells and Tom Byrum, who had 69s, and Wayne Grady, sho shot 68.

Weibring was alone on top for most of the day, but bogeyed the 16th and 18th holes. Pate also bogeyed the 16th, but birdied the 18th to earn a share of the lead.

Zoeller, attracting the largest gallery among the 150 players, matched par for the first 10 holes, birdied Nos. 11 and 13, then finished with five successive pars to strengthen his bid for $108,000 first prize.

Arnold Palmer fired a 7-under-par 65, his best round of the year by four shots, and took a two-stroke lead in the opening round of the Crestar PGA Seniors tournament at Richmond, Va.

“There’s no question that I rolled the ball well today. The big difference was I made a few,†said Palmer, 59,who had not broken 70 in a first round on the Senior Tour this year and who had shot just four 69s overall.

Palmer had six birdies and two bogeys for a 32 on the front nine of the 6,644-yard Hermitage Country Club course, then had three more birdies for an incoming 33.

Tied at 67 in the chase for the top prize of $48,750 were Don Massengale, Gene Littler and Bobby Nichols.

Defending champion Larry Mowry, who won his first Senior Tour event here last year as a rookie, was one of five players at 68. Tied with Mowry are Lee Elder, Bob Charles, Gardner Dickinson and Ralph Terry.

Susie Redman, a non-winner in three years on the LPGA Tour, shot a 2-under-par 70 to take the second-round lead in the $225,000 Safeco tournament at Kent, Wash..

Redman, 22, was at 5-under-par 139 after two trips around the 6,222-yard Meridian Valley Country Club course. That was one shot better than veterans Patty Sheehan and Beth Daniel, who shot 69s.

Next at 141 were LPGA Hall of Famer JoAnne Carner, after a 71, and South Korean Ok-Hee Ku, who had a 70.

Spain’s Severiano Ballesteros shot a 5-under-par 66 to extend his lead to five shots after two rounds of the $680,000 Lancome Trophy tournament at St. Nom La Bretche, France.

Ballesteros has a 36-hole total of 130, 12 under par. Countryman Jose-Maria Olazabal was second at 135 after a 66.
