Appraising the Animal Activists
Animal rights activists are not doing anyone any kind of service. And the proper issues are never mentioned by anybody on either side of this debate. The issue is this: The whole of civilized human existence depends on some kind of concept of human rights.
Humans have rights because they have rational, conceptual consciousness. Animals have no rights because they don’t. If the animal rights activists such as Chris DeRose succeed in their goals, the result is not going to be animals treated more humanely, it will be humans treated more like animals.
