CAMPAIGN ’88 : Dukakis Endorsement
The National Abortion Rights Action League endorsed the Democratic presidential ticket of Dukakis and Lloyd Bentsen on Tuesday, arguing that legal abortion might not survive four years of a Bush Administration.
Both Dukakis and Bentsen have records in support of the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized most abortions, and the Democratic Party platform reflects that record as well as urging an easing of current restrictions that deny poor women medical funds for the procedure.
Bush, during his eight years as vice president, was adamantly anti-abortion, and during the Republican National Convention supported efforts by anti-abortion advocates to retain the party’s absolute opposition to all abortions.
