A federal judge in St. Paul, Minn., accepted most of an $8.75-million jury award to a Minnesota woman in her suit against G. D. Searle & Co., manufacturer of the Copper-7 intrauterine device that she said left her sterile. Judge Robert Renner, however, lowered the emotional distress award given Esther Kociemba to $400,000 from $1 million, based on state law limiting recovery for intangible losses, including emotional distress, to $400,000. Renner said the damage awards for pain and suffering and punitive damages would remain.
