Emerson Fittipaldi moved into fourth place in the CART-PPG national championship race by winning the CART Road America 200 Indy car race at Elkhart Lake, Wis., Sunday.
Fittipaldi set a speed record by averaging 122.215 m.p.h., breaking the mark of 120.155 set by Mario Andretti, last year’s winning.
Fittipaldi, a two-time Formula One champion from Brazil, drove a Chevrolet-powered Lola and finished 1.07 seconds ahead of second-place Bobby Rahal. Andretti, also driving a Lola-Chevrolet, finished third.
With three races remaining, Danny Sullivan leads the point stands with 128, Rahal has 123, Al Unser Jr. 120 and Fittipaldi 100.
