Local News in Brief : Santa Clarita College District Trustee Chosen
- Share via
John D. Hoskinson, a senior vice president of Gruber Systems, a Valencia manufacturing firm, has been selected to fill a vacant seat on the Santa Clarita Community College District board of trustees.
Hoskinson, 41, replaces Don Benton, who resigned in August to take a job in Oregon. The board of trustees selected Hoskinson Saturday after interviewing applicants for the post.
The trustees said they decided to appoint Benton’s successor after learning that holding a special election next spring, just months before the term expires in November, would cost the district more than $60,000.
Under the state Education Code, a special election could still be held if Hoskinson’s appointment is challenged in petitions signed by 1.5% of the district’s 55,935 registered voters. If petitions challenging the appointment are not filed within 30 days, Hoskinson’s appointment will become official Oct. 10.
Hoskinson, a Newhall resident, ran unsuccessfully for the board of trustees in 1984 against Michele R. Jenkins, the board president.
