Fire officials say arson caused an early-morning blaze Sunday that roared through an East San Diego building housing several firms, including a Vietnamese-language newspaper.

When firefighters arrived, smoke was pouring from the second story, which holds the print shop for the newspaper Dien Dan Thanh Nien.

It took 2 dozen firefighters about 45 minutes to extinguish the 3:30 a.m. fire in the two-story structure in the 4900 block of University Avenue, said Capt. Larry Cooke, a Fire Department spokesman.

The blaze, which investigators traced to flammable liquids that were spilled and then ignited, caused $145,000 damage to the building and its contents, Cooke said.

“We know the fire is an arson, but the rest is still under investigation,†he said.

No one was injured, but several small businesses were displaced by the damage.
