Local News in Brief : Fumes Put Inmates, Officers in Hospital
Ten inmates and two officers from a police jail in San Pedro were treated at area hospitals Monday morning after they inhaled insecticide fumes, Los Angeles police said.
The 12 men complained of nausea and dizziness after a spray can of insecticide was mistaken for a disinfectant that was to be used “to kill some odors,†Sgt. Jerry Jelenic said. “Unfortunately, the substance was a residual insecticide for which the label warns to avoid inhalation and skin contact.â€
Ambulances were summoned to the Harbor Division jail at 2 a.m., but the men were “all fine†after they were released from area hospitals later Monday morning, Jelenic said.
There were 35 inmates in the jail at the time, but only the 10 inmates in a large misdemeanor cell were affected, the officer said.
