Racing at Del Mar : With Toro Up, Affordable Price Beats Variety Baby by 3 1/2 Lengths
DEL MAR — Affordable Price surged ahead on the backstretch and stayed in command the rest of the way to win Thursday’s $65,800 feature race for 3-year-old fillies at Del Mar.
Ridden by Fernando Toro, Affordable Price finished 3 1/2 lengths in front of favored Variety Baby, with Pearlie Gold another four lengths behind.
Affordable Price was clocked in 1:41 4/5 for the 1 1/16 miles.
The winner paid $13.20, $4.80 and $3.60.
Variety Baby, ridden by Chris McCarron, returned $2.80 and $2.60 after being sent off as the even-money favorite of the Del Mar crowd of 10,476. The show payoff on Pearlie Gold, ridden by Russell Baze, was $6.
Each of the first three finishers carried 115 pounds.
A chestnut filly trained by Jerry Fanning, Affordable Price won for just the second time in 13 starts this year.
The victory was worth $38,800 for the filly’s owners, DanDar Farm and Northwest Farms.
