Muslim Tradition Sees a Need for Telescopes

MANAMA, Bahrain — A centuries-old Muslim tradition of spotting the new moon with the naked eye to define lunar months is giving way to modern technology.
Saudi Arabia’s top Islamic theologians have ruled that telescopes may be used, and a royal decree has ordered observation posts set up across the kingdom, the Jidda-based Arab News reported Wednesday.
