Accident Will Keep Tyson Inactive
Mike Tyson suffered a concussion and an episode of amnesia when his car struck a tree last weekend, doctors said Tuesday, and Tyson’s manager said that will keep the heavyweight champion from fighting Frank Bruno in London on Oct. 22.
Neurologist Carolyn Britton of New York’s Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center said, “He may have been unconscious as long as 20 minutes. He was still groggy when he came to in the ambulance and was quite alert in the hospital. His neurological examinations were normal.â€
A cardiologist said that there is no evidence of electrical or mechanical problems with Tyson’s heart after the accident, which occurred Sunday morning near the fighter’s training camp in Catskill, N.Y.
Tyson’s manager, Bill Cayton, said, “The fight (against Bruno) is off. I don’t know when he will be able to fight again. It will have to be against Bruno because of the contract.â€
Britton said it would 30 to 60 days before the champion could resume training.
“We strongly recommended against the fight,†Britton said. “He had a concussion. The other thing was that he’s had amnesia.â€
