Tyson Will Remain Hospitalized for More Testing and Observation

NEW YORK — Heavyweight champion Mike Tyson will remain in the hospital at least until today undergoing evaluation for injuries suffered in a weekend car accident. Tyson is in stable condition.

Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center officials released no new information on the fighter’s condition. They said he could not be reached by phone because he asked not to have one.

A hospital official said a news conference is to take place today at noon EDT, at which time doctors may explain the extent of the injuries that threaten Tyson’s title bout in London with Frank Bruno. Tyson is scheduled to fight Bruno Oct. 22 in London.

A doctor said Tyson sustained “minor injuries to his head and chest wall” when his car hit a tree on a rain-slicked road Sunday.

“Mike is fine,” said Bill Cayton, the fighter’s manager. “I have no real concern. But before I let him go to England, he will be thoroughly examined. Unless he’s perfect, he won’t go. Only if he’s perfect, will the fight go on. According to reports from the doctors, he’s absolutely in A-1 shape.”
