Burmese students and anti-government demonstrators in the capital of Rangoon threatened to launch further strikes and mass protests unless an interim government is formed to supervise multiparty elections that would end 26 years of one-party rule. Opposition groups set a Wednesday night deadline for the government. Opponents of the ruling Burma Socialist Program Party have rejected President Maung Maung’s proposed nationwide referendum on the future of his party. Meanwhile, about 50,000 people gathered for a memorial on suburban Rangoon’s Inya Lake, where anti-government groups say police killed and brutally assaulted students during demonstrations in March.
