The commander of the U.S. 6th Fleet has been disciplined and forced to retire because of improprieties involving travel claims and use of government aircraft, the Defense Department said. A Pentagon statement said Vice Adm. Kendall Moranville received a punitive letter of reprimand for the offenses, which the Defense Department did not specify but reportedly involved his allowing a female friend to fly illegally on military aircraft. The Washington Post reported Moranville, who is 56 and married, apparently allowed an Italian woman companion employed by the United Service Organizations in Naples to travel on government aircraft while he commanded the Naples-based 6th Fleet. Moranville, a three-star Navy admiral, was forced to retire as a two-star rear admiral at a pay grade lower than he would normally receive.
