A Los Angeles police officer was killed Saturday night when he was struck by gunfire outside a car wash.
The officer, whose name was withheld, was shot at Crenshaw Boulevard and Florence Avenue about 8:25 p.m., a police detective said.
Further details were unavailable as officers citywide joined in the search for the gunman.
Robert Peterson, an employee at a nearby gas station, said he heard at least six gunshots fired between two cars in front of the car wash.
Juanita Valdez, a neighbor, also said she heard shooting as the cars moved down the street outside her home.
Neither of the two cars appeared to be a police car, Peterson said.
